British Lusitania Propaganda Medal

Flag_of_the_United_KingdomOn the 7th of May 1915 a German u-boat sank the liner Lusitania. The Germans, claiming the vessel was armed and carrying contraband issued a commemorative medal noting the sinking. The British, sensing a propaganda coup, had the owner of Selfridges cast up 250,000 of these same medals in iron and sell them for a shilling a piece as evicence of “Hunnish frightfulness”.
